Polar Magnetograms: Stitches in Space

 

This project is a collaboration that began in 2021 during the pandemic lockdowns. Kate Sammler is a geographer living in Germany, and I am an artist living in California. We have met virtually, sewing embroideries as a way to (re)present ephemeral magnetic phenomena, fields, and orientations visually through textiles. We researched planetary and lived magnetism through diagrams and schematics and shared our discoveries and embroidery techniques and progress. We independently chose topics and imagery that helped us imagine, envision, and then compose magnetospheric moments. Each embroidery is fairly small, creating intimate and detailed reflections of our research.
